In an online poll, “Twilight” earned nods for best movie, best female performance (Kristen Stewart) and breakthrough performance male (Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner). “Slumdog Millionaire” garnered six nominations, including best movie, breakthrough performance female (Freida Pinto) and breakthrough performance male (Dev Patel).

The awards will take place May 31 in Los Angeles and fans can vote for their favourites at the MTV Movies Awards site.

Joining “Twilight” and “Slumdog Millionaire” in the best movie category are “The Dark Knight”, “High School Musical 3″ and “Iron Man”. The other actors vying in the breakthrough performance male category are Ben Barnes for “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Prince of Caspian” and Bobb’e J. Thompson for “Role Models”. Other breakthrough performance female selections are Ashley Tisdale and Vanessa Hudgens(“HSM 3″) and Miley Cyrus (“Hannah Montana: The Movie”).

Apart from Stewart the best female performance nominees include Anne Hathaway (“Bride Wars”), Angelina Jolie (“Wanted”) and Kate Winslet (“The Reader”). Zac Efron (“HSM 3″), will compete for best male performance against Shia LaBeouf (“Eagle Eye”) and Robert Downey, Jr. (“Tropic Thunder”).

The best fight awards is a battle between Christian Bale and Heath Ledger (“The Dark Knight”) and Seth Rogen, James Franco and Danny McBride (“Pineapple Express”).

The best kiss category will see another smackdown between “Twilight” (Stewart and Pattinson) and “Slumdog Millionaire” (Pinto and Patel), with other nominees including Franco and Sean Penn (“Milk”), and Paul Rudd and Thomas Lennon (“I Love You, Man”).

When an undercover reporter pretended to be interested in “adopting” (aka buying) Ali from Quereshi, the girl’s father gave the reporter his sob story:

“We live in one room, seven of us sleep on the floor. I earn £2 to £3 [$3 to $4] a day. I have to consider what is best for me, my family and for Rubina’s future,” said Quereshi.

What about the fact that Slumdog producers have sent Rubina to a UN school and have set up a trust fund the girl will have access to once she turns 18?

Quereshi has adamantly denied any sort of illegal adoption, but with the father of Rubina being more than vocal with his opinion that his daughter was underpaid for appearing in Slumdog Millionaire and the undercover reporters calling their story “fair, true and accurate,” it’s hard not to believe!

Bollywood stars Anil Kapoor and Irfaan Khan, British Indian Actor Dev Patel, and newcomer Freida Pinto received the overall cast prize for the Mumbai-set rags-to-riches saga at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles Sunday night from Anthony Hopkins.

Anil Kapoor, accepting on behalf of the “Slumdog Millionaire” cast, dedicated the award to the slum children shown in the movie.

“They deserve this award. They set our performances,” he said. “It’s the children who’ve done it, not us.”

The Oscar-nominated film tells the heart-warming story a young man from the slums of Mumbai who risks all for love and for a shot at instant wealth as a contestant on the Indian version of the TV game show “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire”.

Patel, who plays the protagonist, and Pinto, his ladylove, introduced the film clip at the event.

“Slumdog Millionaire” also won the top prize from the Producers Guild of America on Saturday, giving it another boost in the race for the Oscars next month.

The top award from the Producers Guild of America or PGA goes to the movie’s producer, in this case Christian Colson, whose previous feature credits consist of three relatively obscure thrillers.

Meanwhile, following its 10 Oscar nominations and expansion into more theatres, “Slumdog Millionaire” has jumped into the North American Top Five for the first time in its 11-week run with its weekend gross soaring by 80 percent to $10.55 million.

Now running in 1,411 theatres across America, up 829 from last weekend, the film has to date grossed a total of $55.92 million, according to the movie website boxofficeguru.com.

The Producers Guild award is considered an important bellwether for Oscar success as its members make up an important constituency of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which votes on the Oscars.

In its first 19 years, 12 of the PGA’s top film picks went on to win the Academy Award for best picture, including last year’s champion “No Country for Old Men” although the producers missed the mark for three straight years starting in 2005.

A: Very. It’s almost unheard of for the Academy not to at least throw a best supporting bone to such a highly regarded film. Of course, no one in this wonderful movie is a “name” actor. “Slumdog” will have the last laugh when it wins best picture.
